Gates

Gates can be manufactured to suit all fence heights and styles with opening widths of up to 10.0 metres for pairs and 5.0 metres for singles. They can be manufactured to suit your needs, back hung to open into site 180 degrees, face hung to open out of site 180 degrees or side hung to open into or out of site 90 degrees each way.
Bespoke pairs of gates can be manufactured with equal or odd width gate leaves, allowing the smaller leaf of a pair of gates to be used as a pedestrian gate, whilst the larger leaf can be used as a vehicle access. Odd leaf pairs of gates can also be used to solve problems with sloping ground, or where there is restricted space to accommodate the ark of the gate.

 

Single gates are generally used for pedestrian access but can be manufactured to suit any width of opening up to 5.0 metres wide. Gates are available to match all railing styles either for setting into the ground, or wall mounted. They can be manufactured to bespoke designs or suit existing openings between walls or combined with a pair of gates to form a triple gate set.
Play Area fencing and gates can be manufactured to meet the requirements of RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) and EN 1176 (the play equipment standard) with minimum gaps of 12mm between the gate and the posts to eliminate finger or hand traps and shear points, spaces between the bottom of the gate and the ground or between vertical bars should be kept between 60mm and 100mm to reduce foot injuries and eliminate head jambs. A shorter over sail than standard should be used on bow topped gates or alternatively flat top gates could be used to reduce the potential of neck jambs being created.  
Specially designed "Playsafe" fencing and gates should be used in all areas where children play, such as school playgrounds or public play areas. To reduce the risk of injury further and help the visually impaired, high visibility self closing single gates are available with damper controlled soft close automatic gate closers and rubber buffers. This controls the speed at which the gate closes and reduces the risk of a child being injured by a swinging gate.
Where a wider access is required, odd leaf double gates, can also be manufactured, incorporating a high visibility self closing pedestrian gate and a standard vehicle gate with a lockable drop bolt. Often used at schools where access is occasionally needed for field mowers or deliveries.
Generally it is always best to site all gates in a clear and level location. However, problems with sloping ground can often be overcome by the use of specially designed gates. Either with tapered bottoms , raked or parallelogram gate frames, by fitting of off set or rising hinges, or by the use of Bi-folding gate frames.

Top Hinge

The typical hinges on vertical bar gates are heavy-duty drop forged steel eye bolts, that are galvanised after manufacture, these allow the gates to be made fully and easily adjustable. They are fitted to the gate frames through solid steel blocks welded to the gate frames and to the gatepost by a welded hinge pin on the bottom and a removable bolt supported by twin welded lugs for the top hinge. The use of a solid hinge block reduces the risk of Rolled Hollow Section gate frames crushing under their own weight over time.

Bottom Hinge

The removable galvanised bolt is generally secured with a nylock nut or anti-vandal nut to prevent the gates being removed.
Hinges are also available in the form of bolt on hinge eyes or fully welded hinge eyes, however these make post installation and adjustment of the gates more difficult and can lead to the crushing of gate frames. Occasionally, on the heaviest of gates, heel and socket bottom hinges are used with the addition of a corner gusset to strengthen the gate stile where it carries the hinge. All hinges are designed to prevent the lifting of the gates when they are in the locked position.

The typical gate locking mechanism is a padlockable slide bar. This is manufactured from 50mm x 10mm flat steel with a horizontal handle. A protective housing can also be added at additional cost to provide increased protection to the padlock.
. Mortice latches with horizontal lever or round knob handles combined with a key operated dead lock can be fitted instead of slide bars if preferred. These locks are fully adjustable to fit most steel gate frames and can be fitted for right or left hand opening gates. The latch can be operated with the handle or the key whilst the dead lock is key operated
Numeric keypad locks which combine two marine grade keypads (Back to Back), with a special lock case with anti ligature features and an adjustable latch bolt, have been designed to fit metal gates of various sizes and types. This self locking system is designed to be as adjustable as possible and is suitable for both left or right handed gates. The two keypads can be simply and easily changed to different and separate combinations as many times as required to suit your needs.
Full protective cowlings are also available to provide increased protection to both the slide bar and padlock from the inside as well as the outside of the gates. These bespoke cowlings are designed to deter would be intruders and help protect both the slide bar and padlock from attack from bolt cutters, hacksaws and angle grinders.
Fire Escape / Panic latches can be fitted to single gates where escape routes have to be maintained. These are fitted with a push-bar or push-pad locking mechanism located within a protective shroud that allows easy access from the inside of the secure boundary and restricts the access to the locking mechanism from the outside.
Drop bolts are generally provided on all gate leaves to pin the gates in both the open and closed positions, these can be manufactured in non-standard lengths to accommodate sloping ground. They can also be made padlockable so that only one leaf of a pair can be opened whilst the remaining gate leaf is left securely locked. Standard or "Easy-Clean" drop bolt sockets are installed in the ground to receive the drop-bolts.  
Typically, standard vertical bar gate frames are manufactured from rolled hollow section steel or flat steel sections to sizes as detailed in the British Standard tables shown below.
Rolled Hollow Section Steel gate post sizes as required by the British Standards are also as detailed within the tables, although equivalent strength Universal Beam posts are can used instead dependant on the current availability and market price for the steel sections.
The vertical bars are continuously welded all around to each rail rather than being just spot welded so that they form an integral part of the gate frame, thus reducing the need for vertical braces (muntins) or corner gussets to hold the gate square.
